Inspired by the scriptures:

1 John 4:19 - “We love because he first loved us.” (NIV)

Matthew 22:37-38 - Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (NIV)

John 13:14 - “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” (NIV)

Note from the composer: Yes, Jesus told us to love God with all our heart and soul and mind. And to love our neighbors as ourselves—which we sometimes call the Golden Rule. And some of our “neighbors” are easy to love, like (hopefully) all of our family members and friends. But what about everyone else: people who are our enemies, or people we just don’t know? We are commanded to love them too. And while we are loving them we need to remember that we are no better than them. We’re sinners—just like the rest of humanity. As my lyric says, “We’re sinners like the rest, except we’re blessed with salvation.” We know that God loves the world so much that He gave His only son, Jesus, so that whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life. (John 3:16) We must love the world the way God loves the world. The way He loves us.
